Ishaq Madan’s journey into photography began in the most organic of ways: as a young boy, camera in hand, documenting family trips and capturing his loved ones.

“A passion to explore and observe naturally honed my skills,” he shares. “Perhaps my interest in photography was planted in me as a child when I would be the family photographer during trips, taking pictures of my mom and brother.” This early curiosity would later bloom into a distinctive creative practice, marked by a focus on street and conceptual photography.

The vibrant cultural tapestry of Bahrain plays a crucial role in shaping Ishaq’s artistic lens. “The island is a melting pot of cultures intersecting one another,” he explains. “This unique characteristic shaped my vision, enabling me to see more than the surface level.” His images invite viewers to see the world as he does—not just through the lens of a camera, but through a deeply empathetic and nuanced perspective.

Madan’s work often explores universal themes of love, fear, and connection, creating what he describes as “visual poetry.” Whether capturing fleeting moments on the street or crafting intricate conceptual projects, his approach reflects an ongoing dialogue with the world around him. “It feels like the world and I are collaborating to create a time capsule that one day will show the transformation of time,” he says.

This collaboration is evident in his dual practice of street and conceptual photography, which he balances seamlessly. “They work together in parallel,” he notes. “The environment complements the story I intend to convey. Sometimes it’s simply a way to highlight our upbringing or roots.” His creative process is similarly fluid, beginning with simple keywords and evolving into detailed vision boards and plans. “I’ve been blessed with an imaginative mind,” he says. “It helps me visually connect with what I want to create.”

As the Photographer-in-Residence at Al Riwaq Art Space, Ishaq has delved deeper into the responsibilities and ethics of his craft. “Through the residency, I became more aware of the dangers of Orientalism and how, as artists, we need to be self-aware of the work and messages we put out into the world,” he reflects.This consciousness extends to his collaborations, which play a pivotal role in his practice. One of the most significant has been with Noon By Noor, a partnership deeply rooted in shared artistic values.

Fashion photography offers Ishaq a different yet complementary avenue to express his artistic vision. “They somewhat intertwine since I understand the surroundings and how a model can interact with them,” he explains. For him, fashion is not just about style—it’s about storytelling. “I find fashion exhilarating, especially when I have the creative freedom to use pieces to convey visual poetry and unstructured forms.”

The intersection of fashion and art fascinates him, particularly the way small details—design, stitching, materials—contribute to the larger narrative. “Ultimately, the intention behind creation evokes emotion,” he says, underscoring the depth and thoughtfulness that define his work.

Reflecting on his journey, Ishaq recalls pivotal moments that have shaped his career. From being featured by MoMA to collaborating with Noon By Noor, each milestone is a testament to his dedication and artistry. “I remember seeing their first New York Fashion Week show back in 2012 in the GDN when I could hardly be considered a photographer!” he laughs.

As he looks to the future, Ishaq is driven by a desire to inspire emerging photographers in Bahrain and beyond. His advice? “Stay consistent with your practice and push boundaries respectfully to create what hasn’t been created yet.”

My innate curiosity to observe and experience the world.

2. What is your career highlight?
I’ve been blessed to have experienced many highlights, making it difficult to choose one; from exhibiting in New York with MoMA, to being featured in Harpers Bazaar, and Conde Nast Traveller. I’m simply grateful.

Shots with the sail.

4. Where’s your next destination, and what essential items would you pack?
A cozy getaway in Copenhagen or cultural stroll through Northern Japan. I would pack my vintage Nikon 35ti film camera and Nikon Zf, can’t go anywhere without them!

5. What’s your creative soundtrack?
Nujabe’s entire discography or Ólafur Arnalds & Kiasmos collaborative album. However, lately I’ve been obsessed with Japanese duo Ziproom.
